Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas is a great place to visit when you get tired of the neon lights and sound of ringing slot machines. While Vegas does offer a lot of entertaining shows, less than 20 miles from the strip you can see shows of a more natural theme in Red Rock Canyon.

Here you will find sandstone cliffs and canyons along with interesting wildlife and plants. You can get a guided hike from one of the Rangers where you might find big horn sheep and desert tortoise as well as some of the best background scenery in Nevada. Bring your best hiking boots because you want to take a hike over to the 3000 foot-high cliff for the amazing view.

You'll also be able to see petrified sand dunes along with cascading waterfalls that flow through the canyons into the Mohave Desert which is actually one of the world's hottest deserts during summertime. While you're there, keep looking up because if you're lucky you might be able to see one of the red tailed hawks that circle the area looking for a meal.

Some of the peaks at Red Rock Canyon are 8000 feet above sea level which means they stick up more than a mile in the air from where you stand. Joshua trees can be seen here and there and there are large bands of white and red rock.

You can climb up calico hills which has short trails and gives you many views of the canyon. Here you can see Las Vegas to the south and you might even be able to pick out the shapes of some of your favorite casinos.

The largest gash in the cliffs is called Lost Creek Canyon and winds 20 miles through multi-colored hills crossing the desert town of Pahrump.

From Spring Canyon. you can see the beautiful 30 foot waterfall which is actually dry for most of its length during the summer but still provides an extraordinary view no matter what time of year you see it.

When visiting Red Rock Canyon, you need to be sure to wear the appropriate clothing for the time of year as well as the activity. You don't want to go there in strappy sandals and an evening gown. This is the desert so it can be quite hot during the day but very cool at night. We are hiking boots because you be walking around a lot and bring plenty of water to drink.

You can get to Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas by following Charleston Blvd. which goes across the strip . few blocks past Teh Stratosphere Tower veer to the left as it turns into Highway 159 (Blue Diamond Rd).
